The Old Elizabeth Carver worked primarily in the 1720's and 1730's, possibly based in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In the book New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones: History in the Landscape, Appendix B provides a list of anonymous New Jersey stone carvers of the 18th century. The Old Elizabeth Carver I is described as follows: "This carver may have worked in Elizabeth. He carved skulls and crossbones on sandstone. His mortality images were some of the most detailed in colonial New Jersey. He is well represented in colonial burial grounds in Elizabeth and Woodbridge." The Farber Collection does not distinguish the two Old Elizabeth Carvers the same way that New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones: History in the Landscape does.
