St. George's Manor Cemetery
East Setauket, New York
40.9540000, -73.1092000
The final resting place of several Revolutionary War patriots and members of George Washington's Culper spy ring. Generations of the Smith, Strong, and Brewster family members are buried here.
Located in an area of East Setauket called Strong's Neck, this burial ground is marked by the Town of Brookhaven as a historic site. The cemetery is the final resting place of William Tangier Smith, who arrived in New York in 1686. He and his wife Martha are present in the oldest burials at this site, dating from 1705 and 1709 respectively. The cemetery is also the final resting place of Selah Strong and Anna Smith Strong, who were both patriots of the American Revolution. Both were members of the Culper Spy Ring. Anna would communicate with fellow spy Caleb Brewster by hanging specific articles of clothing out to dry to indicate how and when to retrieve information meant for George Washington. Selah was imprisoned in New York City for aiding in the Patriot effort, before being released and joining the Continental Army.
This site holds the graves of generations of descendents of these notable interments. It also has several examples of colonial headstones whose craftsmanship is both distinctive and artistic.
The survey map below includes the colonial section of the cemetery, but there are more modern headstone markers to the north and west that are not recorded in the site notes.
