Sagg Cemetery

Sagaponack is a village on the eastern end of Long Island. The village was founded in 1653, with it's burying ground being established shortly thereafter. In his book Sketches from Local History, William Donaldson Halsey noted that Sagg Cemetery may hold the distinction of being the oldest burying ground in the area. "The records indicate that this settlement was made as early as 1656, Josiah Stanborough being the first man to locate there. In his Will dated July 6th, 1661, he gives his 'body to bee burried at Sagaponack by my former wife'. This infers at least, that his 'former wife' had been buried there prior to the date of his Will." Today, the burying ground is located between Sagg Main Street and Cemetery Lane. It contains colonial headstones of slate, brownstone, and marble, and many of the early stones were imported from New England. The Cemetery includes interments from many notable families in the village's history.
